Quantifiable outcomes in implementing midwifery and birth centre model :

  • Reducing caesarean sections
  • Decreasing maternal mortality in India

Qualifiable outcomes in implementing midwifery and birth centre model:

  •  Improving respectful maternity care
  • Empowering women to take control of their health during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and beyond.

What is a midwife?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a midwife as a trained medical professional who has completed a midwifery program and is registered to practice midwifery. Midwives provide care for women and families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period including newborn care.

What is the current status of the midwifery workforce in India?

The Indian government has established initiatives to promote midwifery education and implementation of midwives in the public sector with slow progress. Through the ‘Midwifery Service Initiative’, the Government of India has committed to train about 90,000 midwives to be trained and work in public institutions.  A push to implement midwives in the private sector has yet to be initiated except for a few individual institutions and definitely not on a large scale.

What is the framework for midwifery education?

Our goal is to train midwives, nurses, and birthing professionals to staff the proposed birth centers using a three pronged approach. With the midwifery model of care and birth centres being a relatively new concept in India, nurses have to develop midwifery critical thinking capabilities and a unique skill set that is not taught in standard Indian auxiliary and bachelor’s level nursing programs.

Midwifery Education Institute Tiered Approach

Maternity Nursing Skill Enhancement Programme

Experienced maternity nurses (from the private and/or public sector) with a desire to upskill their practice and knowledge to facilitate normal birth and respectful maternity care.

Nurse Midwifery Programme

BSc (or experienced auxiliary nurses) who enter the program will receive a comprehensive didactic and clinical education in midwifery and will graduate as competent nurse midwives with a defined scope of practice in collaboration/supervision of an obstetrician.

Birth Assistant Training Programme

Ayas, doulas, and other non-medical birth professionals trained in respectful maternity care and supporting women and families non-medically in the birth and postpartum periods. After successful completion of this program, these trained birth professionals will be important support staff in the birth centre.

The students from all three tiers will complete comprehensive didactic learning in alignment with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) essential competencies for midwifery practice. They will also complete clinical/practicals in the birth centres, associated hospitals, and outside hospitals to put their knowledge into practice.

With three levels of training included in our midwifery education institute, the birth centres will be staffed with patient-focused individuals who are passionate about midwifery and respectful maternity care.

Sarvodaya Midwifery initiative

In addition to the didactic learning courses for students, the educational institute will also house a simulation/skills lab. This lab will be available for developing skills beyond midwifery education (i.e. surgical skills, basic life support/CPR skills) for outside medical professionals, students, and community members.
