A pregnancy is considered high-risk when there are conditions that increase the chances of complications for the mother, baby, or both. It doesn’t mean something will definitely go wrong—but it does mean extra monitoring and care are necessary.

Call your healthcare provider or go to the ER if you experience
● Age under 17 or over 35
● Pre-existing health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney issues)
● Obesity or being underweight
● History of complications in previous pregnancies (miscarriage, preterm birth, stillbirth)
● IVF conception
● Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)
● Preeclampsia or eclampsia
● Gestational diabetes
● Placental problems (e.g., placenta previa)
● Infections (e.g., HIV, Zika, TORCH)
● Abnormal fetal growth or congenital anomalies
● Attend all prenatal appointments
● Follow your doctor’s advice carefully
● Eat a healthy, balanced diet
● Take prenatal vitamins (especially folic acid)
● Manage chronic health conditions
● Avoid alcohol, smoking, and drugs
● Get enough rest and reduce stress
● Report unusual symptoms immediately
● A planned delivery (induction or cesarean) may be required.
● Both mother and baby may need extra monitoring after delivery.
● Postpartum mental health is very important—seek help if you feel anxiety, depression, or stress.
